International Students Interested in Applying to the Graduate Program in Psychology

Qualified international students who are interested in applying to our graduate program should be informed of the following before deciding to apply to our program. All international students who are interested in applying to our master degree, doctorate degree or joint master/doctorate degree in psychology should visit the Yonsei University Graduate School (https://graduate.yonsei.ac.kr/graduate_en/index.do) for information regarding the application process. Inquiries should not be made with our psychology department, as all admission process is overseen by the Graduate School.

Before you start the application process, please be informed of the following:

1. All applicants for the graduate program in psychology must indicate which one faculty member/laboratory you wish to be admitted to in the application process. As such, it is recommended that you first contact the particular faculty member to inquire if he/she is admitting new graduate (international) students.

2. Most of our graduate courses are conducted in Korean. While we heavily rely on original empirical articles written in English, and while some professors may allow students to complete their assignments in English, courses are conducted in Korean. As such, you must be proficient in Korean.

3. All graduate school admission process is overseen by the Graduate School (https://graduate.yonsei.ac.kr/graduate_en/index.do). All matters related to Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) should also be addressed with the Yonsei University Graduate School.

4. The psychology department follows the schedule and requirements as the Graduate School. No other materials are needed.

Information for International Graduate Students

1. The following are common required courses.

a. Master Degree Candidates: ‘Webinar in Psychological Science in the Global World, ‘Advanced Psychological Statistics I’, ‘Directed Study 1’ one course from a different psychology major area

b. Doctorate Degree and Combined Master’s and Doctorate Degree Candidates: ‘Webinar in Psychological Science in the Global World’, ‘Advanced Psychological Statistics I’, ‘Directed Study 2’, additional course in statistics approved by the department, three courses from a different psychology major area

2. A graduate student may register for a maximum of 12 credits per semester. However, this depends on the enrolled student’s laboratory and the student’s plans.

3. Degree requirements:

a. Foreign language official test scores: One official certified score must be submitted

i. Minimum score requirements: TOEFL(PBT) 550, TOEFL(CBT) 213, TOEFL(iBT) 79, TOEIC 850, TEPS 640, New TEPS 350

ii. International students: TOEFL(PBT) 500, TOEFL(CBT) 173, TOEFL(iBT) 61, TOEIC 600, TEPS 500, New TEPS 268 (minimum score)

iii. International students: Test of Prociency in Korean (TOPIK) Level 5 is also accepted

b. Graduate students must have taken the following courses prior to admission: ‘Psychological Statistics’, ‘Experimental Methodology in Psychology’

i. Courses related to the abovementioned courses are also accepted. In this case, students must complete and submit the ‘Course Requirement Exemption Request Form’ within one week of admission. If admitted students had not taken such courses, they must audit the abovementioned courses at the undergraduate level and must submit audit verification form signed by the professor in charge of the courses.

c. Common Required courses:

i. Webinar in Psychological Science in the Global World (formerly Psychological Science Colloquium; PSY7101)

ii. Advanced Psychological Statistics (PSY6100)

iii. Directed Study

1. Master degree candidates must register for Directed Study 1 at least 1 time

2. Doctorate degree and combined degree candidates must register for Directed Study 2 at least two times

3. Directed Study courses are automatically registered by the school. As 0 credit courses, students must not arbitrarily drop from the courses.

d. Master Degree candidates

i. Minimum of 30 course credits

ii. Minimum one course outside their psychology area of study

iii. Students who have completed at least 18 course credits, who have received at least B- in ‘Advanced Psychological Statistics 1’ and at least two ‘Average’ or higher evaluation by the graduate program department evaluation committee, and who have completed ‘Webinar in Psychological Science in the Global World will be deemed as having fulfilled the requirements of the qualification exam.

iv. Upon passing the qualification exam and having fulfilled foreign language requirements, students may begin their dissertation defense process.

v. Prior to the final dissertation defense, candidates must fulfill one of the following requirements:

1. One publication in a national or international peer-reviewed journal related to the field (SCI, SSCI, SCIE; SCOPUS not accepted) as first author (accepted manuscripts also acceptable)

2. Two presentations at a national or international conference

vi. Dissertation Defense: Proposal hearing → Preliminary defense → Final defense

e. Doctoral Degree candidates:

i. Minimum of 30 course credits. If candidates have not majored in psychology during their master degree program, candidates must undertake 42 course credits)

ii. Minimum three courses outside their psychology area of study

iii. One additional statistics related course from below aside from ‘Advanced Psychological Statistics 1’

1. ‘Advanced Psychological Statistics 2’, ‘Multivariate Analysis’, ‘Experimental Methodology’, ‘Survey Methodology’, ‘Doctoral Seminar in Research Methods’, ‘Psychometrics’

iv. Prior to the final dissertation defense, candidates must fulfill both of the following requirements:

1. One publication in an international peer-reviewed journal related to the field (SCI, SSCI, SCIE; SCOPUS not accepted) as first author (accepted manuscripts also acceptable)

2. Two presentations at a national or international conference

v. Qualifying Examination

1. Candidates who have completed at least 5 semesters and 27 course credits, and who have passed the graduate program evaluation may apply for the qualifying examination.

2. Students must draft a review paper pertaining to his/her area of study and this is deemed as the paper-and-pencil examination. Candidates must then pass the oral examination assessing his/her degree of knowledge in the field.

vi. Students may schedule their proposal hearing the semester following a successful qualifying examination.

vii. Students may schedule their preliminary defense and final defense the semester following a successful proposal hearing.

f. Combined master’s and Doctorate Degree candidates:

i. Minimum of 54 course credits

ii. Qualifying examination

1. Students who have undertaken at least 7 semesters and 51 course credits and who have passed the graduate program evaluation may schedule for his/her qualifying examination.

iii. All other degree requirements are identical to that of doctorate degree requirements.
